Marinko Matosevic defeats Robert Farah 7-5, 6-1
Sixth seed Marinko Matosevic booked his place in the main draw, as he toppled 245th ranked Robert Farah in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, in the final qualifier at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships in Florida,
USA on Monday.
The Australian needed an hour and 26 minutes to beat his opponent in a one-sided contest.
Matosevic was under pressure in his first two serve games but managed to hold after saving a break point in each of them. The Australian drew the first blood, building a 4-1 lead. Farah bounced back by winning three games in a
row, levelling the score at 4-4. However, Matosevic struck the final blow to seal it 7-5.
The Australian made a splendid start in the second set. He captured first three games to move ahead 3-0. Matosevic allowed Farah to win only one game, breaking the Columbian again in the sixth game and serving out the set at 5-1.
The 26-year-old pounded six aces and converted four of the eight break points. While, Farah hit two aces and capitalised on one of the four opportunities to win Matosevic’s serve.
The Australian is drawn to face Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the first round of the main draw.
Michael Yani beats Mischa Zverev 7-6(6), 3-6, 7-5
Seventh seed, Michael Yani of USA, survived the scare in the second set to edge past world number 208 Mischa Zverev 7-6(6), 3-6, 7-5 in the final round of the qualifying draw.
Zverev started strongly, claiming first two games of the first set. Though, Yani broke back in the sixth to equalise the score at 3-3. The American and Zverev held their serve in the next six games to take the set to a tie-breaker.
Zverev grabbed first three points but Yani came back in style to win it 8-6.
The left hander, Zverev, took an early lead in the second set and went up 3-0. The German maintained his advantage till the end, serving it out in the ninth game to seal it 6-3.
Zverev and Yani held their serve comfortably in the first ten games of the decider to square off the score at 5-5. Yani faced some tough resistance in the 11th but after three deuces he succeeded in clinching a 6-5 lead.
Zverev failed to hold his serve in the next game and lost the third set 5-7.
Yani needed two hours and 27 minutes to oust his opponent in a closely contested match.
The American will meet Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia in the opening match of the main round.
