Marinko Matosevic defeats Erik Chvojka in the second round – Caloundra Challenger 2012 CH
Second seed, Marinko Matosevic, tumbled over the Canadian rising star, Erik Chvojka, in straight sets at the Caloundra Challenger 2012 on Thursday. He registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the 25-year-old to book a spot in the final eight at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Queensland, Australia.
The local star stayed on course to bag $50,000 prize money after earning a straight set success at the Caloundra Tennis Club in their first meeting. After pocketing this one hour and 27-minutes battle, Matosevic comfortable advanced into the quarter-finals.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina-born Matosevic assertively entered the first set and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. Later, he suffered the first blow in the sixth game and trailed at 2-4. However, Matosevic re-focused after this and not only
recovered in the very next game but broke the Canadian’s serve once more to clinch the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The Aussie lost his track again in the following set and gifted away his serve in the second game to go 2-0 down. However, he went berserk after this and stroke out the next six games in a row, ultimately sealing the set with a 6-2 win.
All in all, the 26-year-old showed exceptional skills throughout the match. He took full advantage of the several unforced errors his rival committed and clobbered a higher first serve share of 68 percent as compared to Chvojka’s 64 percent. Matosevic also
amazingly marked 30 out of 44 points on it and capitalised on five out of 14 break chances to dominate.
Next up for the second seed is the conqueror of the match between his fellow citizen, Samuel Groth and the Germany challenger, Sebastian Rieschick.
Third seed, James Duckworth, will join Matosevic in the last eight. He stomped over the Indian contender, Vishnu Vardhan, in straight sets to book this place. The Aussie lost his serve once but converted three out of seven break chances to seal the deal
with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in almost one and half hour. He put a cherry on the match by smashing ten aces and manipulating a better first serve share.
