Marinko Matosevic dumps Michael Yani to reach the main draw – BNP Paribas Open 2012
In the qualifying competition for the BNP Paribas Open, the 16th seed Aussie competitor, Marinko Matosevic, prevailed over the 31-year-old American veteran, Michael Yani, to book a place in the main rounds. The two contestants
faced off for the first time in their professional careers on Wednesday, with Matosevic registering a thumping straight sets victory over Yani, 6-2, 6-2, in an authoritative manner.
Matosevic’s victory over the bleak American granted him a berth in the main draw of the season’s first ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000-level event in Indian Wells, California. The 129th ranked
Aussie faced limited resistance from Yani, thrashing him hard to finish off the matchup with twin sets. He took hold of the game early in the contest and sustained his winning impetus until the end.
It was a completely one-sided encounter for the local crowd to watch, with Matosevic dominating every second of it. He outclassed the unseeded American opponent in every segment of the game and gave him very limited opportunities
to have a go at him. The 16th seed Australian dropped just six points on his first serve, bagging 21 out of 27 points and stung four out of five break points en route to victory.
Yani badly failed to convert any of his break opportunities to remain at a disadvantage throughout the contest. He crafted four break points but squandered them away carelessly and finished on the losing side as the result. A total
of 95 points were played in the matchup and Matosevic secured 58 out of them, while Yani kept lingering behind at 37.
Matosevic will begin his voyage in the main draw against the other Belgian qualifier, Ruben Bemelmans, in the first round. Bemelmans formulated a huge upset in the final round of the qualifiers, beating the top seeded Portuguese,
Frederico Gil, in a stiff three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to book a date with Matosevic. The winner of the two will then take on the Argentine world number nine, Juan Martin Del Potro, who received a bye to have a direct access to the second round of the BNP
Paribas Open.
