Marinko Matosevic rallies past Tobias Kamke to enter quarters – Farmers Classic 2012
Seeded sixth in the tournament, Marinko Matosevic overpowered the German contender, Tobias Kamke, in a see-saw three setter at the Farmers Classic 2012 on Thursday. He nudged up a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 success against the Hamburg resident to secure a place in the
quarter-finals at this outdoor hard court event which is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina-born Matosevic lost his track in the second set but found his rhythm again when it matter the most in last set. After recording the victory in one hour and 35 minutes, Matosevic not only edged in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the German but also advanced into the final eight at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Matosevic enthusiastically entered this ATP World Tour 250 series event. He dusted away all three breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves. The Aussie got the breakthrough in the eighth game and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
The world number 108 made a fitting reply in the following set. He got the desiderated break in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Despite losing his serve in the very next game, Kamke unleashed his skills and went on a four game tear. He capitalised on
three out of four break chances to pull out the equaliser with a breadstick.
Ranked 81st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Matosevic re-focused in the final set. He blasted powerful groundstrokes and reeled off all six games consecutively. The Aussie held his entire serves without facing any barrier
and cashed in three out of four break opportunities to carve out the decider with a bagel.
All in all, Matosevic spilled less errors and produced a better first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 41 per cent. He also acceptably availed 29 out of 39 points on it and smashed two aces to rule the match.
Next challenge for Matosevic is the local underdog, Michael Russell, who stunned top seeded Benoit Paire in straight sets to set up this epic quarter-final clash.
