Marinko Matosevic slays Jerzy Janowicz to enter main draw – Western and Southern Open 2012
Australian challenger, Marinko Matosevic, devastated the Polish youngster, Jerzy Janowicz, with a bagel at the qualifying competition of Western and Southern Open 2012 on Sunday. He clobbered a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the 21-year-old to cruise into the
main draw at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event held in Cincinnati in Ohio, United States.
The qualifying sixth seed barely sweated to crush Janowicz in their first fight against each other. After earning the glory in almost an hour-long marathon, Matosevic thundered into the opening round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters
1000 event taking place on the hard courts.
Matosevic entered the Lindner Family Tennis Center in high spirits. He went out of control and reeled off all six games in a row to pull out the opener with a bagel. The Aussie defended the lone breakpoint he came across and cashed in all three break chances
to inch towards the glory.
Ranked 64th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Matosevic carried his rhythm in the follow-up set. After Janowicz held his serve in the fourth game, the Aussie stroke out the last four games consecutively and clinched the set
with a 6-2 score line. He again held his entire serves without facing any hindrance and converted two out of six break chances to his advantage.
All in all, the 27-year-old showed brilliant tennis throughout the battle. He took full advantage of many double faults the Pole coughed and fired two aces. Matosevic clobbered a lower first serve share of 50 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 56 per cent
but spectacularly availed 20 out of 22 points on it.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina-born Matosevic will face off Spain’s Pablo Andujar in the first round.
The Ukrainian contender, Sergiy Stakhovsky, will join Matosevic in the main draw. He shocked the seventh seed, Leonardo Mayer form Argentina, in straight sets to progress at this event. Stakhovsky lost his serve once but broke the seed’s serve three times,
eventually sealing the deal with a 7-5, 6-4 score line. He also hammered six aces and finished the match with 61 points.
