Mario Andretti advises to introduce third cars in F1 – Formula 1 news
Former F1 champion, Mario Andretti, has advised to introduce the concept of third cars in F1 racing so as to help establish the sport in new countries.
“I would love F1 go back to the rule where you could add a third car and have guest driver come in - that's how I broke in,” Andretti told the Globe and Mail. “If you can have your own guys flying their own flag in their country, it brings a lot more attention.
It always plays well and the more buzz you can create, the better.”
With the United States Grand Prix making a comeback this weekend on the new track, Circuit of the Americas (COTA), the former champion thinks that such a purpose built track has been anticipated about for a long time in America. It will help in properly
organising and hosting a race such as F1. He pointed out that many racing tracks have been proposed and used over the years but all have failed to reach the standards and infrastructure required by F1. Providing the drivers with a road course part does not
help and fails to attract and thrill the fans of the sport. He believes that the COTA is a track that will enable to host the race in its full glory which is a good reason for every F1 fan in America to celebrate.
Andretti is the last F1 champion that hails from America which led him to inaugurate the new circuit last month. He admitted that he was not really sure if the track would be a success when he initially viewed it back in June. He was surprised by the amount
of progress made with the track despite the fact that the whole project had been falling into different hands which had raised difficulties.
He insists that with the completion of the new track, United States GP has finally found a ‘fixed home’ and can become a permanent part of the F1 calendar after being in and out for many years. The current event is taking place after a gap of five years.
