Bayern Munich striker, Mario Gomez, believes that his side were below par in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League game against Basel. The two teams locked heads on Wednesday, February 22, at Sankt Jakob-Park.
The Swiss side managed to secure a 1-0 win courtesy a goal from second-half substitute, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valentin-Stocker-c35843.
In the aftermath of the defeat, Gomez stated that the Reds will have to improve on their displays if they want to progress further in the competition.
Gomez admitted that the opponents were impressive on the night and deserved to win in front of the home fans. He opined that once again Bayern took the game lightly which allowed Basel to take advantage of the situation.
The attacker urged his players to get things back on track sooner rather than later if they want to stay alive in the competition and want to achieve favourable results in other events such as the Bundesliga and the German Cup.
While talking to sports website, Goal.com, the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfB-Stuttgart-c40879 star further added:
"You could see today that the players were too hesitant on the pitch. We can still enjoy a successful season, but we have to improve a lot. I'm standing here and I don't know what to say. We have messed up the away match."
On the other hand, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424 also expressed his grief at Bayern’s away loss in the first-leg. He mentioned that the Reds went in with a purpose of winning the game, but were not able to achieve the result courtesy of some solid
defending by the home side.
The goalkeeper admitted that Bayern now find themselves in a tricky situation ahead of the second-leg and will have to play out of their skins to beat the resolute Swiss side.
"[The result] is not what we wanted. We wanted to show we could adapt to a different environment but that hasn't worked out. We find ourselves in a difficult situation. Who knows what would have happened if we went 1-0 up in the
first half,” Neuer concluded.
The Bavarian giants will return to league action on Sunday, February 26, against Schalke before hosting Basel on Tuesday, March 13, for the second-leg of their Champions League knock-out stage encounter.
