The Bayern Munich striker responds to claims made by the former German International.
Mario Gomez got the nod ahead of Miroslav Klose to start against Portugal in their crucial opening fixture of the ‘Group of Death’. Germans were accused of creating very few chances upfront.
Moments before being replaced by Miroslav Klose, the Bayern Munich man nodded a Sami Khedira cross to break the deadlock between the two sides. Although he was quiet throughout the game, the striker rose to the occasion and made
the Iberian side pay.
Despite scoring the winner, Mario was slated by his club’s legendary midfielder Mehmet Scholl, who accused Bayern’s top scorer of being too lazy and not working hard enough off the ball.
Gomez responded to these claims by pointing out towards his goal tally. The Germany international has been in sensational form for his club this season. Only Lionel Messi scored more goals than him in the UEFA Champions League
last season. Gomez scored a total of 13 goals as compare to Messi’s 14 in the Champions League.
"I have been the most successful striker in Germany over the last five or six years, have after Messi scored the most goals in the Champions League, I would like to know why I should change," he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Mehmet Scholl, who spent 15 years at Bayern, claimed he wanted Gomez to fulfil his potential, by doing more for the team by improving his work rate, which will surely reflect in his goal tally. Gomez took the constructive criticism
positively and acknowledged his compatriot’s coaching ability.
"He has already said to me that I am not fulfilling my potential and wants to bring it out of me, and I take that on board, he is a coach, you can learn a lot from coaches,” he added.
Joachim Low is thought to make a few changes to the side that won against Portugal; Miroslav Klose could possibly replace Gomez. Scholl timed his comments perfectly as they will keep the Bayern striker on his toes and he will keep
his feet on the ground.
