Mario Gomez insists Bayern Munich are capable of winning the Champions League
Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez insists that his club is capable of winning the UEFA Champions League in the ongoing 2010-11 season.
He said that Bayern are a very good side in every department and can surely lift the trophy this time around after losing to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan in the final of the previous season.
Bayern play Inter Milan in the second leg of the knockout phase at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday after digging out a sensational 1-0 away win at the San Siro in February 2011. The Munich giants have a huge advantage over their Italian rivals and have a chance
to avenge defeat in the final of the competition. Bayern lost to Inter 2-0 in final of the previous season at the Santiago Bernabeu courtesy a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-Milito-c11166 brace.
The former Stuttgart forward said that the Champions League is the only chance of silverware in the current season after the Munich giants were knocked out in the German Cup at the hands of Schalke and are also virtually out of the title race in the Bundesliga.
But the striker warned his side of complacency against the defending Champions and said that Bayern should be cautious in their approach.
“The Champions League is certainly possible for us and we want to lift it. However, we have to approach the Inter match with great caution,” Gomez was quoted as saying.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 international described the second leg as a tough battle for both sides and added that the opponents are capable of a turnaround so the Germans will have to be up to the mark.
Gomez tipped http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 as the ‘massive favourites’ to win Europe’s premier competition in the current season but also added that Bayern are also one of the teams capable of winning it. He said that the Catalans are flying high in the current campaign and
have brilliant players who can lead them to the title.
“Barcelona are certainly a massive favourite. But in football everything is possible. We are among one of the teams who can win it,” said the striker.
Mario Gomez has had a brilliant season this term and has scored a stunning 28 goals for the Munich giants. He is the top goal scorer in the Bundesliga with 18 goals.
The forward joined Bayern in the summer of 2009 for an estimated fee of 30 million Euros from Stuttgart but was unable to make his mark in his first season with Die Bayern. His performance was a dismal 14 goals in the season but has improved manifolds since
then.
Bayern Munich have had a poor season after winning the domestic double in 2010. They are currently fourth on the Bundesliga table with 45 points and are a staggering 16 points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
