The Bayern Munich striker insists his main focus is to guide his side to winning the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
Mario Gomez has confirmed that he is not looking forward to breaking Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in one Bundesliga season. He insists on being consistent, and wants to score goals at will for the club. Gomez stressed that
individual records are not a worry for him, and revealed that his priority is to help his team win titles.
Gomez has recently been awarded the Sportsman of the Year 2011 award from Abendzeitung Munchen readers, having scored 16 league goals prior to going into the winter break. The striker also won the Golden Boot award last season
after scoring 28 league goals for the Bavarian giants.
The attacker is on his way to break the all-time record for most number of goals in one season, but reckons that it would be better to concentrate on maintaining consistency rather than going for the record, and having a poor next
season.
While talking to the sports magazine, Abendzeitung Munchen, the 26-year-old striker further mentioned:
"This is not a goal that I have set for myself. For me, it is much more important to score consistently over the years. I prefer five consecutive years with 20 goals than one with 40 and then only eight."
Gomez added that he has no intentions of parting ways with the Bavarian giants, after recent speculation that he would leave in the summer. He stated that it is an honour for him to represent one of the top clubs in Europe and
would love to extend his contract at the Allianz-Arena.
Gomez’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season, and the striker is certain to receive an improved offer following his impressive run for the past two years.
"I currently have no ambitions for a change. I am at one of the best clubs in the world, why would I want to go somewhere else?" Gomez concluded.
The former Stuttgart striker is currently the leading goal scorer in the Bundesliga, and his next test will be against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday, January 20.
