The Bayern Munich striker warns against complacency and demands focus ahead of their last game of the Group of Death.
Joachim Low’s side have certainly justified their favourite’s tag, unlike the Dutch who have succumbed to back to back defeats. Germany, on the other hand, have beaten Portugal and the so called favourites Netherlands.
A solid display on Wednesday night has all but knocked out Bert Van Marwijk’s men. Mario Gomez however refuses to be drawn into making any premature judgements. Although Die Mannschaft have taken a maximum number of points available,
the Bayern Munich man believes nothing has been won yet, there is still a long way to go. And they still have to play the last game of the group stage in order to seal their place in the quarter finals.
"The situation is anything but rosy, we haven't won anything yet. We have created a good starting point. Let's just get the third game out of the way,” he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Citing Netherlands’ example Gomez stresses that the favourite’s tag accounts for nothing, as the Dutch crumbled under expectation and pressure, and still have not managed to pick up a single point. In his opinion talking will not
win him trophies, it is his performance on the field that will.
"Holland were on everyone's' list, but now they have lost twice they only have a minimum chance to go through. It shows pre-tournament talk of favourites lead to nowhere,” Gomez added.
The striker also reflects on his current goal scoring form, and states that he was under huge pressure after being criticised from all directions. The Bayern man did not let the criticism affect his performance instead he used
it as a source of motivation.
"We beat Portugal and I thought support would be coming from all quarters, which unfortunately wasn't the case, so I answered my critics again," he further added.
Gomez is most likely to be rested for the final clash of Group B, as his services will be of more importance in the quarter finals. Mario is the joint top scorer of the tournament and is expected to bang a few more in the next
round of the 2012 European Championship.
