Mario Gomez reveals he is sympathetic towards Torres because he has been through a similar barren spell.
The Bayern Munich man was subjected to heavy criticism after his poor performance in the Champions league Final and the 2010 World Cup. Following the World cup he fell out of favour at Bayern Munich and was on his way out, but
the striker turned his fortunes by coming up scoring a total of 39 goals in 45 appearances.
Mario found himself in a similar situation after having a shocker in the final of the 2012 UEFA Champions League. The striker missed a host of chances and was blamed for his side’s loss to Chelsea.
Gomez likens his previous goal barren spell to Fernando Torres’s goal drought at Chelsea. He reveals he was sad to see such talented goal scorer struggle to do what he was best at. After watching the Chelsea man score a brace for
Spain against Ireland, the Bayern man states he was very happy.
“Torres had the same problems as me. So I was very happy that he scored twice after a very hard season with Chelsea," he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Mario Gomez has now put his troubles past him and striker is in sensational form. He scored in Germany’s victories over Portugal and Netherlands, and is the tournaments joint top scorer, scoring all three goals of his country so
far.
Gomez is a safe bet to land the European golden boot, but the striker has dismissed that claims. The Germany number 23 insisted that he is not concerned about personal achievements; instead he wants to fire his country to European
glory.
"Being top scorer is not important for me," he stated. "What's important is that we win the cup,” he further added.
Joachim Low is likely to rest the 26-year old for Die Mannschaft’s last fixture of the ‘Group of Death’. Die Nationalelf face Denmark in the final fixture of the group stage and will look to seal their qualification to the quarter
finals.
They will however, face a stern test from Morten Olsen’s men, who have a massive chance of qualifying for the next round if they manage to beat Germany. So Joachim Low’s men will take nothing for granted and will be focused on
their opponents.
