Mario Gomez’s Liverpool move blocked
Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez claims a transfer deadline day loan move to Liverpool was blocked by the German giants.
Gomez moved to Bayern just last summer, for around £26 million, but has since failed to recapture the form that saw him record a scoring rate of one in every two games for Stuttgart. The former German Footballer of the Year found his chances with Bayern far more limited than he would’ve expected following their heavy outlay on him, and has been the subject of plenty of interest from clubs around Europe.
With first team chances at a premium, Gomez was happy to move, only for the German side to reassure him of his future at the club. Regarding Liverpool’s loan offer, Gomez claimed: “I took the loan offer seriously because I just want to play. But Bayern gave me the impression that they see a future for me.”
Whether or not the Bavarian club are true to their word remains to be seen, but Gomez would certainly have been an excellent capture for Liverpool. With Roy Hodgson so heavily reliant on Fernando Torres as his main striker, Gomez could have taken a great deal of pressure off the Spaniard’s shoulders.
Also, with Torres’ sustained injury problems, Gomez’ arrival would’ve eased fears that if Torres does suffer another injury-plagued campaign, the only replacement would be David N’Gog - the 21-year-old Frenchman who has little experience and is a million miles from a player of Torres’ class.
Furthermore, Gomez would’ve provided the Anfield club with the option of going 4-4-2, with two quality, proven goalscorers.
But Gomez’s move to Merseyside this summer didn’t materialise, so Liverpool will have to hope Torres can stay injury-free in order to fire them towards the top four this season. Don’t rule out a January move for Gomez though, especially if Bayern fails to come up with the required game time for the former Stuttgart man.
