Mario Suarez targets league victory against Getafe
Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez has backed his team to overcome Getafe when the sides meet in La Liga on Saturday, October 16.
Atletico won the first edition of the Europa League and finished second in the Copa del Rey last season, but failed to replicate their strong cup form in the league, where they finished ninth.
So far this season, Enrique Sanchez Flores' team is seventh in the table with three wins, one draw and two losses in six games.
Despite conceding three goals in their defeat to Sevilla in the last round, Suarez believes Atletico's defensive record should help them against Getafe.
"We are conceding very few goals, and we have the basis to achieve great things," said Suarez, whose team has let in seven league goals this season, two of which came against the defending champions.
"We lost to Barcelona, but they are the best team in the world, and so we must try to improve the small mistakes we make in some games."
Getafe, who is level on points with Atletico, but ahead on goal difference in the table, has enjoyed a promising start to the season under manager Jose Miguel Gonzalez Martin del Campo.
"We know that Getafe is a tough team and likes to play good football. At this point we thought we would have a couple more points, but the team is good and we must continue with this attitude."
Suarez to follow Flores' directions
Suarez, who rejoined Atletico from Mallorca this summer after failing to establish himself in Atletico's first team between 2005 and 2008, added that he is hopeful of improving for Flores' team, after making three league appearances so far this season.
"I am getting more confidence from the coach. The important thing is the team, all I have to do is keep working and seize the opportunity, following what the coach is telling me."
