Mario Vazquez Rana resigns from Olympic positions – London Olympics 2012
The Mexican Mario Vazquez Rana, who was a veteran Olympic official, has recently given up all of his positions related to the Olympics.
This also includes Rana’s designation as a member of the executive board of the International Olympic Committee.
The following statements was given in the resignation that Rana provided to the IOC, “I have presented to Dr Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, my irrevocable resignation as a member of the IOC executive committee, as a member
of the IOC and as president of the Olympic Solidarity Commission. It has been very difficult for me to take such a drastic decision. I have decided to take the only responsible, serious and honorable road: RESIGN, resign for love and respect to sport, to ANOC,
to the NOCs and the Olympic Movement.”
Rana, who is currently 79 years of age, will reach his 80th year in the coming June. According to the rules laid down by the IOC, members of the executive board are not allowed to continue after they turn 80.
Not only that, Rana would also be required to let go of his membership that has a duration of 21 years by the time 2011 reaches its close.
The resignation was handed in by Rana to Gunilla Lindberg, who is the secretary general of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC). Not only that, it was also forwarded to the 204 National Olympic Committees of the world. The names that Rana
has recommended to take up the responsibility of the positions he is vacating are Asia's Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah and Europe's Patrick Hickey of Ireland. These two men have been recommended for the post of the IOC executive committee and the ANOC respectively.
Rana also holds the position of the president of the Pan American Sports Organization. Last week saw Rana block a secret ballot that was taking place in order to re elect him as president of the organization for a term of another four years. The secret ballot
was taking place in Mexico City and the basis of the re election was meant to be acclaim/
