Shigeru Miyamoto is an icon in the gaming world, having been at Nintendo from the very start. He has recently paid Rovio, the developers of the Angry Birds games, the ultimate compliment.
The gaming industry is growing at an exponential rate with recent figures showing that it is bigger than both the film and music industry combined. Yet, as with any industry, there are a number of personalities who stand out and whose opinion counts more
than others.
One such personality is Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the brainchild and developer of the Mario series as well as Donkey Kong and the Legend of Zelda. Each of those game series shaped the landscape of the industry and has helped make it what it is today.
On the flip side, the mobile gaming market has exploded in recent years with the advent of the Smartphones with titles such as Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope, Draw Something and of course, Angry Birds.
Miyamoto though reserved special praise for Rovio’s bird flinging physics based puzzle game conceding he wished he’d come up with the idea. He said, “There aren’t many games that I’ve played recently that have truly convincing to me. But that said, I have
very much enjoyed Angry Birds, especially the way in which it combines traditional and new game elements in exciting ways.”
The game is simple enough to describe for that one person who has not played it yet. It consists of Angry Birds on one side and structures with Green Pigs on the other side of the screen. The player has to then launch the birds, each of which have a unique
ability, at the structures and take out the Green Pigs using a slingshot.
Miyamoto continued, “Angry Birds is a very simple idea but it’s one of those games that I immediately appreciated when I first start playing, before wishing that I had been the one to come up with the idea first. I mean, obviously I want to be the one creating
the most convincing, surprising game ideas.”
After those comments one could see the possibility of an Angry Birds title making its way onto the Nintendo 3DS or the Nintendo Wii U sometime in the future. You heard it here first.
