Marion Bartoli and Jelena Jankovic advances at Doha with a bagel
French woman, Marion Bartoli, upsets 8th seeded Israeli, Shahar Peer, with a breadstick and a bagel at the Qatar Ladies Open on Wednesday.
The world number 18, Bartoli had a 70 percent winning record for her last ten match. She is in good shape as she reached the third round at the Dubai WTA Premier event. In this tournament, she ousted Russian, Alisa Kleybanova, by 7-5, 6-2 in the first round.
In the opening set, Peer was only able to win a single set by holding on to her serve but the French woman displayed mind-blowing skills and abilities throughout the set to win it with a breadstick.
With her quick and powerful forehands and backhands, she got three breaks and had a much higher first serve percentage of 60 percent as compared to Peer’s 35 percent. Along with this, she earned an amazing 89 percent win on it.
The world ranked 12, Peer lost her concentration after her shocking defeat in the first set. Meanwhile, Bartoli kept her winning momentum from the first set to the second set as she went on to win six games in a row. The French woman completely destroyed
her as she unleashed her top form in this set as well.
She had an awesome total service point winning percentage and total return point winning percentage i.e. 75 percent and 78 percent as compared to Peer’s 22 percent and 25 percent.
Bartoli will be facing Chinese, Shuai Peng, in the quarter-finals. If she continues to play like this, she can definitely defeat Peng, who came to this spot after upsetting 3rd seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone in the second round.
Joining Bartoli would be the 5th seeded Serbian, Jelena Jankovic, who also won with similar scores to advance at Doha. Jankovic trashed Indian wild card, Sania Mirza, 6-0, 6-1 and out of this WTA Premier event.
World number six, Jankovic had a 60 percent winning record for her last ten matches. Before entering this tournament, she reached the semi-finals at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships where she lost to world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the semi-finals.
She entered this tournament confidently and overwhelmed Omani wild card, Fatma Al Nabhani, in the first round.
The lower ranked Indian was only able to hold on to her serve once whereas the Serb was unstoppable throughout the match. She unleashed her flurry of ground strokes to win the first set with a bagel and the second set with a breadstick.
Jankovic outshined the Indian completely as she registered a higher first serve percentage of 60 percent to Mirza’s 46 percent. She also earned an impressive 72 percent win on it.
Jankovic will be facing the in-form Czech Republican Klara Zakooalova.
