Marion Bartoli bulldozes Chanelle Scheepers to reach round four – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number seven, Marion Bartoli, trashed the 47th ranked South African, Chanelle Scheepers, to book a spot in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas tournament. It was a formidable match for the 28-years-old South African
who only bagged a couple of games in the whole match. Final scores were 6-2, 6-0.
On Monday, both players locked horns for the first time. The 27-years-old French contestant was terrific throughout the match as she is against the minnows. The only problem with Bartoli is that she is unable to deliver the performance
in the big matches. Probably, the same issue the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, is facing.
A cracking start to the encounter witnessed a swap of breakpoints upfront before the French professional tennis ace broke serve for the second time in a row to register a lead of 3-1. She was the better player at the courts, handling
the situation with complete mastery. She broke serve for the third time in the match to register an unassailable lead of 5-1.
Scheepers was nowhere near her supreme game play. She lacked confidence and was bullied across the courts by the French. The opening set was rounded off with an exchange of breakthroughs that set the tone for the double-handed
French contender.
The score in the second set clearly suggests the level of domination from the French. She was unplayable, especially her backhand forceful cross-court returns were a treat to watch. It seemed like she had planned this onslaught.
A pure textbook display from the French dismantled the confidence of the South African who wasn’t able to absorb the pressure.
Bartoli won three breakthroughs in the second set and held her serve consistently to register a bagel. The only ace of the set was smashed by the French who forced her opponent to commit a couple of double-faults as well. 30 points
were won by Bartoli compared to just 14 of her rival. It was a classic display of domination and pace.
Marion Bartoli progresses to the fourth round of the tournament. Next up for her is the Czech starlet, Lucie Safarova.
