Marion Bartoli edges past Romina Oprandi into the third round – US Open 2012
11th seeded Marion Bartoli rallied past Romina Oprandi in the second round of the US Open Championships at the glorious Flushing Meadows in New York. The French number one professional prevailed over
her rival with 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, win on Wednesday.
The Swiss professional took a fairly poor start in the opening set and was unable to hold her serve. She miserably lost the first four games, giving her rival a lead of 0-4. The French professional dominated the sets with
her flawless first serves and returns. She kept her consistency until the end and sealed the opener with six games against two.
The second set of the match reversed the momentum and Oprandi quickly clinched the winning opportunity, jumping to a 3-0 lead. However, after the third game Bartoli tried hard to gain her impetus but she seemed powerless
in front of her rival’s accelerated new game plan. By the end of the fourth game in the set, she merely managed to secure one game. Eventually, the Swiss participant successfully pulled out of the set with a breadstick.
The Swiss right-hander had a high first serve of 84 percent. She converted both the two break points offered to her. On the other hand, the main reason for Bartoli’s failure was her average first serve percentage of 50 and
she was unable to nail even a single break point.
In the third set, both the participants seemed desperate to bag home the victory. The two contenders battled hard and squared their scores at 5-5. The 27-year-old revealed her true colours and marked her desirable serve break
to get into the driving seat of the contest. She wrapped her emphatic win by securing last two games and sealed the closing set with 7-5 win.
The veteran improved her first serve percentage to 69, converting 15 of 25 points in the closing set. This time she was successful in attaining all the three break points presented. Similarly, the Swiss participant had a
55 first serve percentage and she nailed down two of four break points.
The French tennis star will contest against Kristina Mladenovic in the third round. The Serbian professional defeated the Russian profession Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-1, 6-2.
