Marion Bartoli ousts Rebecca Marino in the 2nd round – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Wednesday, 27th of July 2011, was the beginning of the second round of the Bank of the West Classic 2011. French Marion Bartoli and Canadian Rebecca Marino were competing against each other for the first time
on the outdoor hard courts at the Taube Family Tennis Center, Stanford University, California. Bartoli won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
The first set of the match saw Bartoli serve with perseverance and struck two aces however, lack of accuracy caused her to strike two double faults hitting the net. Whereas, Marino smashed four aces along with an unstable hand
struck one line fault.
Both the players had an exceptional serve and an average return. However, Bartoli won the set with a point more than her opponent’s because she was able to convert one out of the four break points that she faced.
Amidst the second set, Bartoli lost control of her exactitude and ended up striking four double shots, I wonder, if she though the net was her opponent and not Marino. On the other hand Marino only struck two line faults.
The French had performed relatively better in her serve winning three percent more in her total serve points and also in her return points she had achieved fifteen percent more than the previous set while, Marino’s serve was relatively
poor than the previous set.
Although, both the players were able to save fifty percent of their break points and managed to capitalise on each other’s break points fifty percent. So now one wonders, who got an upper hand…well of course it was Bartoli who
had the competitive edge because the number of break points won by her was more than her opponents.
Both the players were very competitive but Bartoli won the match with nine points more than the Canuck’s in the total match points.
Born on the 2nd of October, 1984, the 27 year old Bartoli has had forty wins and sixteen loses this year. She reached her Career high ranking of world number 9 on the 22nd of October 2007. Her most notable
performance throughout her career was when she defeated two reigning former world number 1 players; she defeated Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round of the Australian open in 2009 and also defeated Justin Henin in the semi-final at the Wimbledon Championships
in 2007. The French has won six WTA singles titles and three doubles titles.
Marion Bartoli has qualified to the quarterfinal of the Bank of the West Classic 2011 where she would either face Japanese Ayumi Morita.
