Marion Bartoli vs Sabina Lisicki – Quarterfinal Preview: Wimbledon Championships 2011
2011 French Open semi-finalist Marion Bartoli will be facing German tennis pro Sabine Lisicki on Tuesday in the second quarterfinal of 2011 Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
Bartoli has been in commanding form over the last couple of months. She surprised the tennis analysts by reaching the semi-final of Roland Garros a few weeks back where she lost to Francesca Schiavone. The French woman has certainly
carried over her form into the Wimbledon Championships as she has proved to be a very difficult opponent to overcome.
Upsetting four times Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, Bartoli booked her place in the quarterfinals on Monday with a stunning performance at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. In the second round play, she came back
from a set deficit to defeat Italian Flavia Pennetta in another nail biting encounter. Throughout the tournament, the French woman has shown that she has the temperament and game play to floor even the best in the business. If she continued her form in her
upcoming matches, she could cause some real trouble to other top seeded players at the championships.
Bartoli’s opponent Sabine Lisicki has also been in terrific form over the last few weeks. She is on a 10-match winning streak on the green surface and she is improving with every passing round. Clinching her first WTA title of
the season at Birmingham just over a week ago, the German tennis pro is certainly on a roll.
After she was forced out of the game for a good part of year 2010 due to ankle injury, Lisicki has made an amazing come back to the Women’s Tennis Association tour. The German, who has been practicing really hard since her return,
is looking on top of her game and very determined on the court.
“The ankle was bad,” she said. “Now it’s the reason I refuse to give in, won’t let myself be beaten. After all I’ve been through, when I go out to play I’m determined to stay out on court for as long as possible. I won’t give in.”
She made it to the quarterfinal with a thumping victory over Petra Cetkovska. Earlier in the second round play, she ousted the 2011 Roland Garros Champion Li Na in a thrilling three setter.
The two players have met each other three times on the tour previously with Lisicki leading the way 2-1. Lisicki’s both victories against Bartoli have come on the clay court. Bartoli came out victorious in pairs only grass court
meeting at the 2008 Wimbledon. If Lisicki remained consistent with her serves, she has a great chance of beating the French woman. Bartoli, on the other hand, will try and penetrate her opponent’s game with her on court agility and big forehand and backhand
winners.
