Where do maritime tropical air masses form? In which parts of North America do these air masses affect the weather

  1. Maritime Tropical (mT) air masses form in source regions where there is plenty of moisture and warmth. Such areas are tropical and subtropical in nature, most likely being located on or near a large body of water. The Gulf of Mexico is a good example. Primarily the Eastern half of the United States is affected by them. Regions affected by them will experience above-average temperatures and high humidity. If a cold front (approaching continental polar air mass) moves towards this type of air mass, then showers and thunderstorms (or worse, even severe weather) is sure to develop.
