Maritime vs continental climates?

Can someone explain the differences between maritime and continental climates.

&& also what is the general rule regarding elevation and temperature?

  1. though the above answer is true it does not adequately explain how it is the continental climates are so different than marine climates. in order to fully understand the range of possibilities of diverse differences between both climates you first must understand how solar heat is stored in water and soils. water stores heat more profoundly than soils do, as soils only store heat on the surface. these two conditions of heat storage is perhaps the most basic and main reason for the differences between both climates. of course when heat storage is combined with winds, weather patterns etc. the differences can become lessened or heightened.
