Maritimer to return to the races in the Autumn Stakes at Woodbine
Ramzan Kadyrov’s 3-year-old colt, Maritimer, will make his return to the races after a lengthy layoff, and will look to continue his good run of form at Woodbine race course, this time in the Canadian Garde 2, $150,000 Autumn Stakes on 10 November, 2012.
The Champion Canadian 2-year-old, Maritimer will be making his first start since he ran in the Group 2 UAE Derby Sponsored by The Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah on 31 March, 2012. Maritimer was making his 2012 seasonal debut in the race, and in Dubai he never got going, as he weakened to finish 11th in the 1 3/16 mile event to winner, Daddy Long Legs.
Prior to his sale to the controversial Chechen president, Ramzan Kadyrov, Maritimer won the Coronation Futurity Stakes at a 2-year-old on 6 November, 2011, at about 1 1/8 miles over Woodbine’s synthetic surface.
The Ontario-bred son of Stormy Atlantic went on to defeat Menlo Castle in second and Hampstead Heath in third, with the winning time of 1 minute and 50.91 seconds, for the first running over the distance of 1 1/8 miles.
Out of Highland Ruckus mare Highland Mood, Maritimer defeated Menlo Castle once again second, and took the Display Stakes over Woodbine’s synthetic surface, but this time the juvenile colt was cut back to 1 1/16 miles, as Patrioticandproud finished third.
The Grade 2 Autumn Stakes is too run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles, and it has reeled in seven, 3-year-old and above colts and geldings.
Since finishing third in the Display Stakes, Patrioticandproud has improved immensely for trainer Mark Casse and his owners Gary Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, by winning the Toronto Cup on Woodbine’s turf this summer, and then on 13 October, the Proud Citizen colt claimed a head victory in an allowance optional claimer over at Woodbine’s synthetic surface.
Maritimer will be going against older horses for the first time this year, and there is very little separating between them, but they will be familiar with each other’s running styles as Alpha Bettor, City Wolf and James Street have raced together in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup and finished one, two, three, respectively.
