Mariya Koryttseva upsets Vitalia Diatchenko in qualifiers of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
World numbers 215, Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva slay World number 159, Russian Vitalia Diatchenko with a bagel on Sunday. She earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory over the Russian to advance in the qualifiers of the 2011 Porsche Tennis Grand
Prix in Stuttgart.
The 25-year-old Ukrainian hasn’t had much progress this season and was ousted from the qualifiers at Brisbane, Australian Open, Acapulco and Marbella. She also lost in the first round at Bogota but in this tournament she entered
with a different strategy. Koryttseva trashed German Kathrin Worle with a breadstick in the first round of the qualifiers and dumped the 20-year-old Russian in straight sets to book her spot in the third round.
The Ukrainian displayed tremendous skills in the match and earned a bagel in seventy minutes on her first ever face to face with Diatchenko. Despite losing her serve early on and having a slightly lower first serve share of 64
percent as compared to the Russian’s 67 percent, she earned an amazing 81 percent win on it. Koryttseva broke the youngster’s serve twice by converting two out of six breakpoint opportunities to her advantage. She also clobbered less double faults and prevailed
throughout the match to eventually clinch the set with a 6-4 win.
She perfected her winning ways in the second set as she went on savage mode to reel off six games in a row. Koryttseva completely outshined her opponent throughout the set as she saved both breakpoints she faced and converted all
three of the breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to seal the set with an awesome 6-0 score line. The Ukrainian also had a much better first serve share of 72 percent as compared to the youngster’s 60 percent and registered an impressive 72 percent win
on it. In addition to this, she fired an ace and clobbered double faults once.
Diatchenko on the other side of net has won only three out of her last ten matches and is in poor form this season. She only participated at Australian Open, Dubai and Marbella before entering this tournament. The Russian exited
from the first or second round at these tournaments. At Stuttgart, she rallied past German Tanja Ostertag in a three setter match to reach this spot but found the deck stacked against her.
The Ukrainian will next face another Russian, top seeded Anna Chakvetadze who reached this spot after dumping her countrywoman Regina Kulikova in straight sets. Koryttseva can make another upset if she carries her winning ways
into the next round to eventually reach the main draw.
