Mark Allen, Gerard Greene beat Marco Fu and Fung Kwok Wai in the semifinal of 2011 World Cup Snooker
Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen and Gerard Greene have made it to the final of 2011 World Cup Snooker by beating Hong Kong’s Marco Fu and Fung Kwok Wai by 4-3 in the semi-final at the Bangkok Convention Centre on Sunday, July 17. The Northern Irish pair is
one of the favourites to win the world cup and they will meet China’s Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo in the final.
Northern Ireland had a superb run in the group matches where they only lost to England. Allen and Greene faced Scotland’s John Higgins and Stephen Maguire in the quarter-final clash. The match was a thrilling encounter and ended in a sudden death frame where
Allen beat Higgins by the scoreline of 86-27.
Allen and Greene faced tough resistance from the Asian duo and were at the edge of losing the match when the scoreboard showed 3-3. Team Hong Kong played terrifically during the match and managed to drag the game into a decider frame where Mark Allen defeated
Marco Fu by 102-0. A splendid display of teamwork from Allen and Greene brought them to the final spot against China.
Speaking to the local media after the match, Allen said, “We made it hard for ourselves being 3-1 up but managed to pull out a good frame at the end and if we play well in the final we have a chance. We've been winning the singles matches but not the doubles
but I will take that. We need to play as well as that, if not better. Liang and Ding must be playing well to beat Wales 4-1.”
He added, “I wouldn't like to play one-frame matches for ranking points but it's definitely something different. You don't have to do much wrong and sometimes you don't have to do anything wrong to lose a frame.”
The final will be played at the Bangkok Convention Centre in Thailand where Allen and Greene will meet China’s Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo, who defeated Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens by 4-1 in the other semi-final.
