Mark Allen, Gerard Greene reach quarter-finals at Bangkok Convention Centre: 2011 World Cup Snooker
Northern Ireland’s team, comprising of Mark Allen and Gerard Greene, defeated Belgium 3-2 to reach the quarter-final stage of 2011 World Cup Snooker, on Thursday, July 14 at Bangkok Convention Centre,
Thailand. The Northern Irishmen are already leading Group C with 11 points after three victories and seem in a great position to achieve the world cup glory.
Mark Allen and Gerard Greene had a strong run since the very beginning of their group matches at Bangkok Convention Centre arena. They won all of their matches quite easily to make it to quarter-final
stage of the event.
The pair faced India in the opening match, where they performed tremendously beating Pankaj Advani and Aditya Mehta of India with a convincing scoreline of 4-1. They lost only one singles frame where
Greene was defeated by Mehta, by 32-71.
Allen and Greene gave the same medicine to Brazil’s Fabio Luersen and Noel Rodrigues in the second match. Allen lost one of his singles competition, however, the pair still managed to nudge Brazil
down by 4-1 to top Group C with eight points.
Their third clash was against Belgium, which proved to be a bit tougher than the previous two. However, after losing one singles and a doubles frame at the hands of Luca Brecel and Bjorn Haneveer,
Allen and Greene eventually grabbed the victory in the decider frame, and won the match 3-2.
While speaking to the local media after the victory, Allen said, "We got what we needed and that was what we set out at the start of the competition to do - to qualify for the quarter-finals. We still
have to play England and that's going to be another tough match but we have to beat them and win the group to avoid Scotland."
Greene added, "Three wins from three matches sounds good. It wasn't very pretty today but it's the result that counts."
Both Greene and Allen still have one match to play against England on Friday, July 15. England’s Mark Selby admits that their clash with Allen and Greene will be the toughest out of all the matches
they've played in the event so far.
