Mark Allen apologises over his cheating comments: 2012 World Snooker Championship
Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen has issued an official apology over his recent comments he made regarding his Chinese opponent after their game. The Northern Irishman overstepped the line once again this time and called the Chinese potter, Cao Yupeng, a cheater.
He believed that Yupeng gave a blatant push during the match which caused him lose the frame and the referee also did not see that.
He was quite disappointed over his defeat and made such harsh remarks against his opponent. His words offended the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) and its chairman Jason Ferguson along with the World Snooker
Chairman, Barry Hearn. Both snooker bodies reacted angrily on his comments and warned him of a possible ban.
Allen was very confident of beating the debutant Chinese potter, Cao Yupeng but he was not able to perform accordingly and lost to the young Chinese cueman after he potted the cue ball playing the final black in 16th frame. He could not swallow
his defeat and uttered words like ‘blatant cheating’. Now the Pistol has realised that he has done wrong and he has issued an apology.
While speaking to the media, Allen said, “Having taken some time to reflect on my comments I can appreciate that I overstepped the line at a time when I was heavily influenced by the emotions of a disappointing defeat. I would like to take this opportunity
to apologise to Cao Yupeng if he felt that my comments were insinuating he were a cheat.”
The 26-year-old added, “I would also like to apologise to World Snooker. I appreciate the hard work by many people to grow our sport and I am truly horrified to think that my actions could be perceived to be detrimental to this.”
Meanwhile, the WPBSA has issued a letter to Allen and has asked for explanation for his actions. They are expecting an answer for Allen within 14 days. Allen believes that in the recent season, he has been facing ups and downs but he will return next season
with a new spark. It will be interesting to see what penalty Allen may possibly face due to his harsh comments.
