Mark Allen beats Marcus Campbell to set up Stuart Bingham clash in 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen grabbed his second round victory against Scotland’s Marcus Campbell to storm into the quarter-final stage of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open.
Allen will next meet England’s Stuart Bingham in his quarter-final encounter at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria. The Northern Irishman has high hopes in the Australian event and believes he
will perform well in the tournament.
The Pistol had a tussling encounter with Welshman Ryan Day in his opening match, which he eventually won by 5-3. Day was a strong competitor but not strong enough to nudge the 2011 World Cup Snooker
finalist down. Allen played up to the mark in his first round match and with the help of some outstanding clearances, he managed to steal the victory.
The 25-year-old faced Scotland’s Marcus Campbell in his round two clash, however this time he faced no resistance from his opponent. He smashed some terrific knocks of 101, 71, 100, 63 and 67 to completely
tumble the Scotsman down to 5-1 in the end, making his way into the Last 8.
While speaking to the local media after his stunning victory in the competition, Allen said, “The scoreline was 5-1 but that flattered me. I played well but in the early part Marcus was dominating.
He had a bad run of balls but at the time he wasn't giving me a look in. I was 2-1 up and it could've been 3-0 down and that continued after the interval.”
He added, “You don't need much to go wrong to lose the match and I said to Marcus afterwards that he had the worst run of luck I've seen someone have against me. I'd hardly lifted my cue in the break
so I'm fresher but also rusty. The match practice I got in Thailand has stood me in good stead. It was a tough match against Ryan and it didn't get any easier against Marcus.”
The Antrim-based cueman was quite pleased about his performance in the match and was ambitious of clinching the quarter-final against Englishman, Stuart Bingham.
