Mark Allen of Northern Island fancies his country to win 2011 Snooker World Cup – Snooker news
Mark Allen and Gerard Greene, who are representing Northern Ireland in the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup, posted their second comfortable win on Wednesday, as they bulldozed the Brazilian team, consisting of Fabio Luersen and Noel Rodrigues by a frame score of 4-1.
Northern Ireland, who previously outplayed India by the same score-line, is now getting pretty close on becoming the first side to qualify for the World Cup, which has been brought back to the scene after almost 15 years.
The Pistol, Allen, was delighted with the victories and he thinks he and his teammate, Greene, who currently hold the 32nd position in the world ranking, can take Northern Ireland to the World Cup glory.
Scotland and Wales are the two countries which everyone is considering favourites for the tournament. However, Allen believes they are also among the favourites to lift the trophy.
He commented on the reigning Crucible King and the world number two, John Higgins, who claimed earlier in the tournament that they are the favourites and everyone wants to beat them.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I saw John Higgins in his press conference say all the pressure is on Scotland as they're the top ranked team and everyone is out to beat them. But we're one of the dark horses coming through. We're here to win the tournament and not make up the numbers.”
Brazil defeated Belgium by a frame of 3-2 before coming up against Allen and Greene and the Irish professionals will now be up against Belgium in their next match. Therefore, Allen believes they should be the favourites for the match.
He said, “It doesn't feel easy out there and we struggled a bit today and were fortunate the Brazilians didn't play as well as they had in their earlier matches. Brazil beat Belgium in one of their other matches and we play Belgium next so we have to fancy our chances.”
Mark Allen and Gerard Greene are no doubt considered among the best snooker players but let’s see if they can really take their country to the 2011 Snooker World Cup glory.
