Mark Bartelstein refutes rumours that NBA Players Agents are lobbying for NBPA’s breakup
NBA player agents are not seeking a blow-up of the player’s union, as largely implied in the press over the last few days.
The agents are in fact supporting the union in its struggle against the NBA owner in the current labour dispute. This was revealed by powerful NBA agent Mark Bartelstein.
The NBA labour dispute has been going on for quite a while now due to the inability of the owners and players to come to an understanding over a new CBA. The old one expired and the league entered a lockout on July 1st.
Since then, negotiations have been very slow. In fact, during the first two months only two meeting were held between the NBA owners and the players union. During September there seemed to be some momentum building and there was optimism in the air after the two parties held back to back meetings on consecutive days.
However the meeting held last Tuesday, which many had viewed as the one where some breakthrough will be achieved, ended in disappointment with both sides once again accusing each other of rigidity in their respective stances.
Since then a lot of voices have started speaking up for a decertification of the NBPA. A union breakup will allow players to sue the NBA in federal court. Many agents are believed to have been in favour of decertification right from the start and it was rumoured this week that some powerful agents have gathered and started serious agitation for it.
Agent Mark Bartelstein though has quashed all such talk in a recent sit down. The powerful player agent said categorically that agents are not in favour of the decertification.
“There’s an inaccurate perception out there that there’s this group of agents — including myself — that have decided to quote-unquote blow up the union, or destroy the union, and nothing could be further from the truth. “ he told Sports Illustrated.
Mark revealed that contrary to the image of agents in the media, he has been actively working with the Player’s union in trying to find a solution that satisfies all parties. Mark was of the view that an amicable resolution would allow all involved, including players and their agents, to continue to grow.
“I’ve tried to help the union, to explore different ideas and different ways to try and bring this thing to a positive resolution — a resolution that’s not only good for the players, but good for the game. If there’s a game that’s good for the players, then ultimately they’re going to benefit because the game is going to grow.” The agent said.
