Mark Boucher, Imran Tahir and David Miller dropped for ODIs against SL – Cricket News Update

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced its 14-member squad for the opening two games of next month’s five-match One Day International series against Sri Lanka.

The wicket-keeper, Mark Boucher alongside leg-spinner Imran Tahir and batsman David Miller have been hurled out, while the all-round duo of Dean Elgar and Rory Kleinveldt is in.

Boucher is the most experienced player in the present South African national setup. He has played in 295 ODIs, scoring 4686 runs at an average of 28.57. He is also the world’s most successful gloveman in the longest version of the sport with 540 dismissals
to his credit.

The Proteas are currently engaged in a three-Test series against the islanders. The hosts won the opening Centurion Test comprehensively, but the islanders squared the series 1-1 by clinching a thrilling 208-run win in the Durban Test. The third and final
game is set to be played at Cape Town from January 3-7 next year.

In the first couple of Tests, Boucher failed to spark with the bat. In his three innings, he collected just 75 runs with the best of 65.

In October 2011, the South Africans suffered a humiliating ODI series defeat to Australia at home. Keeping that in mind, the selectors are adamant that they have picked the best available side to avoid such embarrassment against the Lankans.

On the selection of Elgar and Kleinveldt, CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson stated, “Elgar fully deserves his opportunity. He was the leading run-scorer in the (domestic) one-day cup and also had the best average. In addition
he gives us very useful bowling options as a left-arm spinner.”

“Kleinveldt played an important role with the ball in helping the Cobras to win the one-day cup and he also has a lot of potential as a lower-order power hitter,” he added in a statement.

The first contest of the limited-over leg of the clash is scheduled to be held at Paarl on January 11, 2012.

South African Squad:

Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (captain), JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe
