Mark Brown fades at the BMW New Zealand Open on day four
Mark Brown missed out on a chance to become the first New Zealander in nine years to win the BMW New Zealand Open, after he faltered for a one-over par 73 in the final round, on Sunday, November 25, 2012.
The tournament was co-sanctioned by the OneAsia Tour, and the PGA Tour of Australasia at the Clearwater Golf Club.
Entering the final round, Brown had a three-stroke lead, thanks to a sparkling six-under par score in the third round.
He was New Zealand’s only hope to bring back the prestigious Brodie Breeze Trophy home after a lapse of nine years.
However, the Kiwi star failed to hold on to his lead, following a poor performance with his putter.
Throughout the final round, he struggled with his short game and missed a number of birdie opportunities that he created.
In total, he used 33 putts to complete his final round campaign, and watched the lead evaporate in front of his eyes.
As a result, he managed only one birdie against two bogeys to finish three strokes behind the winner, Jake Higginbottom.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled at fourth. Jason Norris and Peter Wilson, in the meantime, shared the second spot on the leaderboard.
"I played well enough. I played beautifully for the first 10 holes and I didn't miss a shot," he said. "[But] I only holed one putt. I had 33 putts for the day so that's never going to win a golf tournament. It probably proves that you can't win a
golf tournament with your long game, you're going to have to hole a few putts and today that didn't happen”.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he also stated that he was disappointed because of the lingering issues with his short game.
According to him, he will have to tweak his game with the putter, in a bid to achieve the targets that he has set for his career.
"It's just frustrating. It's probably been a career thing for me so I've just got to get better if I want to reach the goals that I want to reach”.
