Mark Calcavecchia leading 2011 Regions Tradition at Alabama Shoal Creek Golf Club – Champions Tour
Mark Calcavecchia is leading after the second round of the Regions Tradition, which is the first major on the Champions Tour.
Calcavecchia posted an amazing seven under par 65 to secure lead at the Alabama Shoal Creek Golf Club. The player continued his bogey free performance and made his way to the top three shots ahead of Kenny Perry.
Perry, who is in second place, carded a 65 to be one stroke ahead of Michael Allen and Jay Haas. Haas has his eyes on this course and also the one his son is playing in. Bill Haas is currently one of the top players on the leader board of Wells Fargo Championship
taking place in North Carolina.
The second round played by Calcavecchia was truly amazing as he made birdies one after another. The 1989 Open Champion started off by making a birdie on the third hole and continued his birdie spree on the sixth and seventh holes as well. On the back nine,
Calcavecchia really put the golf course on fire as he made three birdies in a row. Finishing off with a birdie on the seventeenth hole, the player finished with a secured lead.
Calcavecchia’s wife Brenda is surely doing a good task of being a helpful caddie. This is the second time in less than a year that Calcavecchia has been near to a major title win on this Tour. In the Open in 2010, the player was second after two rounds but
dropped to 73rd place after posting closing rounds of 77 and 80. Hoping to maintain the lead and do well this time, Calcavecchia does not want to give in to pressure.
“I didn't handle that too good,” admitted Calcavecchia. “But then that was a just a tad bigger tournament than this one. I'm sure I'll be nervous. You want to get off to a good start. That's where you want to be. You don't want to be sneaking up on anybody
from six shots behind, although that's happened before, too. But it's always nice to be out in front.”
Overall, the upcoming two rounds of the Regions Tradition will surely be interesting to follow.
