Mark Calcavecchia leads after first round of the Open Championship
The 140th edition of the Open Championship has kicked off with all the top guns of the world aiming to leave their mark on the par-70 Royal St. George’s Golf Club. The third major of the season carries a purse of $7,300,000 and 600 FedEx points. Here
is a quick look at today’s leaderboard after the first two hours.
Mark Calcavecchia leads the first round after the opening 14 holes. The American has compiled a score of two-under-par after carding three birdies and one bogey. The player teed-off from the front, as the front holes are known to be less severe than the
back nine.
Graeme Storm of England was one stroke behind the leader at one-under-par after fifteen holes. Storm also teed-off from the front and reeled two birdies against two bogeys. This left him at par. However, on his way to the back nine, he faired better and
birdied two of the first three holes. He did however, miss the par-putt on the par-4, 15th, and spilled the chance to go right on top of the leaderboard.
Thomas Bjorn bogeyed the closing hole after picking three birdies on the front. The Dane is on his way to the back and judging by his streak of birdies, the player looks set to add a few more to his scorecard.
Danny Willet of England is all set to complete his first round. The player has two more holes to go with a score of one-under-par. The player could not grab a point at the start of the day, as he was getting used to the tricky greens of the Royal St. George’s
Golf Club. However, after the seventh hole, where he rolled-in his debut birdie, the player gained some confidence and started attacking the pin from a distance. In doing so, he picked two more birdies, but also dropped a shot at the par-4, 13th hole.
Swedish golfer Fredrik Jacobson teed-off from the back after completing the first nine holes. The player picked two birdies against two bogeys, which eventually left him standing at par.
