Mark Cavendish crashed during the Dwars door Vlaanderen
Mark Cavendish was looking good during the Dwars door Vlaanderen but had to face the disappointment during the final 15 kilometres of the race.
The cyclist was lucky to have survived any major injuries and managed to finish the race at the 58th position.
Niki Terpstra of Team Omega Pharma-Quickstep wins the race with an impressive time of 4 hours, 29 minutes and 46 seconds.
His team-mate Sylvain Chavanel grabbed the second position with a deficit of 47 seconds on Niki.
Koen De Kort, Jan Ghyselinck, Alexandre Pichot and Filippo Pozzato occupied the third, the fourth, the fifth and the sixth positions in the respective order.
Cavendish told reporters after crossing the finish line, “With 15 to go I had a bidon in my front wheel. It was a Katusha bidon launched in the middle of the peloton".
"200km on Belgium's worst roads. All OK. 15km from finish, peloton's riding easy & a dickhead throws a bottle in my front wheel. Crashed hard”.
"Said it before: EVERYONE involved in a bike race should take a written & practical test to get licence...” he posted on the twitter account.
Mark started his professional pursuit with Team Sparkasse in 2005 and rode with the team until 2006.
He accepted an offer from the American side, Team HTC in 2006 and represented the team for a period of six years, until 2011.
Team HTC-Highroad announced its demise by the end of 2011 season and Cavendish had to select a new home to continue his professional goals.
He accepted an offer from the British side, Team Sky and has already claimed six stages in the young season.
Mark grabbed the third and the fifth stage of the Tour of Qatar and finished first at the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne 2012.
He won the red jersey during the second and the third stages of the Tirreno-Adriatico and also won the second stage of the race.
The biggest win of his season yet came during the UCI Road World Championships 2011by overcoming Matthew Goss an Andre Greipel.
The reigning World Champion is warming up for the 2012 Olympic Games and is keen to optimistic to win gold in front of the home crowd.
