Mark Cavendish disappointed with his Gent-Wevelgem performance
Mark Cavendish was left shattered after a disappointing end to his Gent-Wevelgem campaign. The cyclist now has to wait another year to fancy his chances at the Belgian race.
He was looking good before the race but could not hold on to his tremendous form. Mark finished the race at the 58th position as he struggled during the descent of Kemmelberg.
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step claimed the first position during the 234.6 kilometre stage.
He finished the race in a fastest time of 5 hours, 32 minutes and 44 seconds to secure his eighth victory of the season.
Peter Sagan, Matti Breschel, Oscar Freire Gomez and Edvald Boasson Hagen achieved the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions.
Mark started off the 2012 season with a stage3 and stage 5 victories at the Tour of Qatar.
He also finished first at the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne along with a stage 2 victory at the Tirreno-Adriatico.
The 26-year-old held the red jersey during the second and the third stages of the Tirreno-Adriatico to mark a perfect start to his 2012 campaign.
While commenting on his below par performance during the Gent-Wevelgem he noted, “It’s just that usual thing. You happen to be on the one wheel that loses a wheel in front”.
He further added that, “We turned left on the descent of the Kemmel and it was one line. It wasn’t that hard to be honest but when you’re head down it’s quickly 30 meters and you can’t get across”.
“It would have been better to be nearly the front but I was in the top 25 and thought I was laughing but next time I’ll have to be top 10”.
The cyclist was unlucky during the 2011 version of the race and was disqualified because of a crash.
He is optimistic to climb the podium during the coming season and only time will tell if the UCI reigning champion can add the Flanders Classics in his bag.
The cyclist is now eyeing the Giro d’ Italia, the Tour de France, UCI Road World Championships and the  2012 London Olympics as the biggest goals of his 2012 season.
