Mark Cavendish dominates the 230 kilometre stage 2 of the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012
Mark Cavendish of Team Sky Procycling proved his legs yet again at the second stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012.
He crossed the finish-line ahead of Oscar Freire Gomez, Tyler Farrar, Peter Sagan and Sacha Modolo to fill his bag with yet another victory at the season.
The reigning World Champion finished the race in a fastest time of 6 hours, 32 minutes and 32 seconds and achieved the fifth overall position after the stage 2 classifications.
Mark has now secured his fourth overall victory of the season and is looking good to claim the top podium spot after the final general classifications.
Team Sky Sports Director Servais Knaven cited, "Everyone is really happy with that".
He added, "It was an exciting finish and hard to control with some short climbs in the final, there were a few attacks and then the last 3km was descending which meant the pace was really high".
He continued, "It was not easy to be in the right position to make a sprint but the guys worked together perfectly and made a great lead-out for Cav".
Mark started his 2012 season at the Tour of Qatar and registered the stage 3 victory, despite the illness. He also grabbed the fifth stage of the race and finished fifth overall at the event.
The 26-year-old also succeeded at the Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne 2012, scheduled on February 26, 2012.
Matthew Harley Goss of Team GreenEdge Cycling is still leading the overall classifications with a lead of 13 seconds over Cavendish.
Stuart O’ Grady, Sebastian Langeveld and Cameron Meyer are at the second, third and fourth positions in the respective order.
Diego Caccia grabbed the first and the second sprints of the race, while Stefano Pirazzi claimed both the mountains categories of the event.
Cavendish has now jumped to the top spot at the Points classifications with Diego Caccia, Oscar Freire Gomez, Tyler Farrar and Peter Sagan secured the next four positions.
Team GreenEdge is leading the team’s classifications with Team RadioShack-Nissan at the second and Team Garmin-Barracuda at the third position.
Cavendish is a big threat to Harley’s overall lead as the Manx professional cyclist overcame Goss during the UCI World Championships 2012.
