Mark Cavendish makes his presence felt at the high performing Team Sky
While Team Sky was busy escorting Bradley Wiggins throughout the three-weeks of the Tour de France, Mark Cavendish was one man completely overlooked by the team.
The reigning UCI Road World Champion gave a timely reminder about his skills as he stormed through the finish line during the final stage of the Tour de France 2012.
He completed the 120 kilometre race in a quickest time of 3 hours, 8 minutes and 7 seconds and restricted his major opponents.
Peter Sagan, Matthew Harley Goss, Juan Jose Haedo and Kris Boeckmans occupied the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
It was Mark’s third stage victory at the race after his successful spells during the stage 2 and the stage 18 of the Tour de France 2012.
The Manxman was riding the French Grand Tour with the green jersey in his sights, an award he won in the last season.
He was delighted after the stage victory and thanked his colleagues for their support during the contest.
“I planned to go at 300 to go. I knew I could go long, especially with the wind today,” Cavendish said.
“You could go slightly early. I was going to go at 300 but we came around the last corner at such speed that I thought I'd just use my acceleration now and hopefully distance the other guys and hold on”.
“It’s incredible to have the second on GC controlling the breakaway all day and then the yellow jersey himself leading out me and Edvald out”.
The 27-year-old is enjoying a fabulous season with several victories to his credit during the first season with the team.
He bagged stages at the Tour of Qatar, Tirreno-Adriatico, Giro d’Italia, Ster ZLM Toer and the Tour de France and also finished first at the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne to mark a perfect 2012 start.
Mark secured the fourth overall spot after the final point’s classifications with a total number of 220 UCI points to his credit.
Peter Sagan secured the top overall spot with 421 points while Andre Greipel and Matthew Harley Goss occupied the second and the third positions with 280 and 268 UCI points respectively.
