Mark Cavendish riding the Tour de France with the Olympic Games as his chief objective
Last year’s Tour de France point’s classifications winner, Mark Cavendish has taken the back seat as the whole Team Sky is supporting their leader, Bradley Wiggins.
Bradley is currently leading the Tour de France overall classifications with a total lead of 1 minute and 53 seconds on the reigning Tour de France champion.
Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling, Vincenzo Nibali of Team Sky Procycling and Denis Menchov of Team Katusha hold the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Wiggins was a Tour de France pre-race favourite and he has proven all the analysts right, through his superb performance during the race.
Cavendish is also enjoying terrific form with as many as seven stage victories in his bag during the Tour of Qatar, the Tirreno-Adriatico, the Giro d’Italia, the Ster ZLM Toer and the Tour de France 2012.
The Manxman rode brilliantly during the Ster ZLM Toer and secured his career’s first general classifications victory at the race.
“It’s not claustrophobic to be in it – it’s really nice to be in it – but it takes a lot of energy mentally to concentrate on one thing for three weeks,” Cavendish cited
“To move out of it and enjoy normal life for one day is really good”.
Marks’ major cycling goal of the season is the 2012 Olympic Games and the cyclist is really looking forward to grab gold in front of the home crowd in the coming race.
“We’re flying straight out on Sunday night and we’re just treating it as part of this, it’s a four-week process,” he said. “There might be a couple of days where I can relax but then there are three days of really working towards it”.
Team Sky is having a terrific season and currently holds the second overall position after the stage 10 team’s classifications.
Team RadioShack-Nissan is leading the category with a total lead of 4 minute and 58 seconds on the British side.
Team BMC, Team Astana, Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Team Liquigas-Cannondale occupies the next four positions.
The 2012 version of the Olympic Games is scheduled from July 28 to August 12, 2012 and Mark Cavendish is a definite favourite to grab gold in front of the home crowd.
