Mark Cavendish secured his second Tour de France victory after a storming performance during the stage 18 of the race
Mark Cavendish of Team Sky continuous his point’s classifications pursuit at the Tour de France as he wins the stage 18 of the race.
The reigning UCI Road World Champion was lightning fast during the event and completed the 222.5 kilometre race in a convincing time of 4 hours, 54 minutes and 12 seconds.
Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge, Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Luis Leon Sanchez of Team Rabobank and Nicolas Roche of Team AG2R La Mondiale secured the next four positions respectively.
"I don't know how much I won by, but I had to go early. I haven't done anything this Tour because I saved so much energy,” Mark cited after the race.
“I knew I'd be able to go long. I knew I'd get it. I felt really good today".
"I said earlier on in the Tour, we looked at the files and the reason I wasn't winning sprints was because I was training in the mountains”.
“I wasn't able to show anything in this Tour because we had the yellow jersey”.
The 27-year-old secured the top overall spot at the Tour de France 2011 points classifications and currently holds the fourth overall spot after the stage 18 classifications.
He has a total number of 175 UCI points in his back pocket with Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale comfortably placed at the top spot with 386 points.
Andre Greipel of Team Lotto Belisol and Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge claimed the second and third spots respectively with 264 and 238 UCI points respectively.
Cavendish also won the stage 2 of the Tour de France after his storming performance that restricted Andre Greipel and Matthew Harley Goss during the 207.5 kilometre race.
Kris Boeckmans of Team Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling claimed the 115km opening sprint of the race whereas, Mark wins the final 222.5 kilometre sprint 2 of the event.
Nick Nuyens, Michael Albasini, Yukiya Arashiro and Alexandr Vinokourov claimed the first, second, the third and the fourth mountain of the race.
Peter Sagan, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Tejay Van Garderen, Dominik Nerz and Thibaut Pinot were the top five young riders on the day.
