Mark Cavendish to lead team Britain in the World Championships 2011 – Cycling News
Britain has announced their team for the World Championships as Mark Cavendish has been given the leading role at the event at Copenhagen starting next week. David Millar and Bradley Wiggins will be representing Britain in the Elite Men’s Time Trial.
Cavendish was rather slow towards the start of 2011 as his first victory came after winning the stage 6 at the Tour of Oman in February. His second win of the season came at the Flanders Classics, Grote Scheldeprijs as he tied the record with Alessandro
Petacchi. Stage 10 win at the Giro d’ Italia 2011 brought the first big victory for Cavendish this year as he continued his performance by winning the stage 12 of the Grand Tour.
Mark is undoubtedly the most renowned cyclist in Great Britain as on June 11, 2011 he was chosen as the Member of the Order of the British Empire or the MBE in the honour of the Queen’s birthday. Cavendish was full of confidence when he went to ride at the
Tour de France 2011 as he showed his dominance by winning stage 5, stage 7, stage 11, stage 15 and stage 21 of the Tour. Mark Cavendish now has a massive number of 20 Tour de France stage wins in his bag.
The 26-year-old will be accompanied by Christopher Froome, Steve Cummings, Jeremy Hunt, David Millar, Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins and Ian Stannard at the road race. Mark will be hopeful to continue his ongoing form and do his best at the Championships
as he is currently riding in his home at the Tour of Britain 2011. He finished the 6th stage of the tour at 26th position and is at 16th position after the stage 16 general classifications, 2 minutes and 11 seconds behind the
race leader Leopold Koenig.
Bradley Wiggins is the top British rider at the UCI World Tour individual rankings of September as he has secured a 7th position whereas Cavendish is at the 26th position. Great Britain is at the 5th spot according to the
UCI World Tour nation rankings and it will be interesting to see if Cavendish and company can help their team jump up a few positions after the World’s event.
