Mark Cavendish to lead team Briton in the Olympics test event – Cycling News
Green Jersey winner in the recent Tour de France, Mark Cavendish will have the honours of leading the Briton team in the London Olympics test event. Cavendish along with Tyler Farrar of USA, Tom Boonen of Belgium and Matthew Goss will participate in the
event scheduled on the August 14th.
A total number of 148 riders are chosen from 28 International teams and they will ride through a track of 140 kilometres passing through 6 different boroughs of London. The 26-year-old has missed the opportunity as he went really close in the previous years
to win the green jersey. He set his mind for it right from the beginning of this year’s Tour de France.
Mark Cavendish’s boys will have to compete with strong teams from France, Italy, Belgium and team Australia, who have a really strong line up for the event. Matt Goss, Michael Matthews, Chris Sutton, Heinrich Haussler, Leigh Howard and Stuart O Grady will
represent team Australia in the Olympics test event later this month.
Alex Dowsett, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Roger Hammond and Peter Kennaugh have already made their way to the Great Britain team.
Cavendish had a good Tour de France winning himself a green jersey and became only the second Briton after Robert Millar to step up the podium for Tour de France. Cavendish also won the fifth stage of Tour de France and is a serious contender to win the
gold medal in next year’s London Olympics.
Mark dedicated his win at Tour de France to his team as he said, “I’m winning the jersey on behalf of eight other incredible guys. Nine of us rode together on this Tour de France. We’ve had to work incredibly hard for this jersey, winning six stages on the
way.”
Cyclists who can challenge Cavendish at the 2012 Olympics Games podium are Sylvain Chavanel of France, Farrar of United States, Davide Appollonio of Italy and Tom Boonen of Belgium.
Cavendish is now free from his American team HTC-Highroad and is more likely to ride along with Team Sky in 2012 London Olympics.
