Mark Cavendish triumphs in stage six of Tour de France
Britain’s Mark Cavendish has won the sixth stage of the Tour de France in Gueugnon.
The Team Columbia rider sprinted to the finish line against Tyler Farrar of the United States, who finished second, with Alessandro Pettachi finishing in third.
It is the second stage win for Cavendish in successive days, and today’s win has put him back in the points contention for the green jersey, with Norway’s Thor Hushovd leading the way. It is also the fourth time in his career that Cavendish has won back to back stages - one of only four riders to do so.
Fabian Cancellara retains his yellow jersey, but is now only 20 seconds ahead of Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas and still 39 seconds ahead of Australia’s Cadel Evans.
Today’s stage was the longest of the Tour, with a total of 227.5 kilometres being cycled.
Cavendish has recovered from his terrible start, where he was almost out of the green jersey running, by taking the 12th stage Tour win of his career.
“The guys rode perfect. It was a really hard day. It was up and down and there were a lot of miserable faces but we kept it together. It was a perfect lead-out, we had to use other teams and Mark Renshaw led me out off the back of [Team] Lampre and [Team] Garmin,” said Cavendish.
