Mark Cavendish wins Olympic test event as Stuart ‘O Grady hopeful for his sixth Olympics
The 140 kilometre Olympics test event was raced by about 150 cyclists as British cyclist Mark Cavendish managed to win the event in front of the home crowd at London.
Cavendish after winning the race shared his thoughts as he said, “The crowd were incredible the whole day. You can’t get a sense of how the 2012 race will go, but you can get a feel for this course and the route is good.” He further added that winning today’s
race was a great feeling but it does not have anything to do with the London Olympics race as that will be a different race all together.
Mark was amongst the favourites before the event and was greatly supported by the home crowd while the American cyclist Tyler Farrar who was also amongst the favourites was unfortunate as he was involved in a crash towards the end of the stage.
Cavendish of HTC-Highroad finished first with Sacha Modolo of Colnago-CSF Inox at second, French cyclist Samuel Dumoulin at third and Stuart O’ Grady finishing fourth at the London Olympics test event.
Stuart ‘O Grady is looking ahead at the Olympics 2012 and is likely to participate in his sixth Olympics at London next year. The 38-year-old who is at the end of his contract with team Leopard Trek has signed a two year contract with Green Edge starting
from 2012. ‘O Grady rode the London Olympics test event and he finished fourth while most of his team-mates were involved in a crash towards the end of the stage.
The Australian has now signed up with team Green Edge as he believes that he will be more helpful towards his country by signing with an Australian team as he said, “This is a new and exciting opportunity for the future, to help Australian cycling and develop
the young guys and pass on my years of experience.”
Stuart had been with Leopard Trek for the last six years and now agrees that it was really a tough decision to sign up with GreenEdge as he had understanding with the team management and players and was more comfortable with the team. He further added that
it was not easy for him to leave the Number one squad in the world but he had to make the tough decision.
