Mark Cavendish wins fifth stage of Tour de France
Mark Cavendish of Team Columbia has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France in Montargis.
The Briton took the 10th stage win of his career and his first of 2010. Gerard Ciolek of Germany finished second and Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway in third.
Cavendish needed the stage win as he was losing ground on Thor Hushovd, who finished fifth for the points battle for the green jersey.
Fabian Cancellara still retains his yellow jersey, 23 seconds ahead of Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas and 39 seconds ahead of Australia’s Cadel Evans.
During the day, Bradley Wiggins suffered a fall in the neutralised zone. The leader of Team Sky was in pain but was able to continue and catch up with the peloton.
Cavendish had a bad day in yesterday’s stage, with Alessandro Petacchi outsprinting him towards the end.
The win for Cavendish puts him back in the hunt for the green jersey.
