Mark Cavendish wins the final stage of the Tour de France 2012
Mark Cavendish of Team Sky Procycling secured his third Tour de France victory after his outrageous performance during the 120 kilometre stage 20 of the race.
His previous two wins came during stage 2 and stage 18 of the race and the Manxman was delighted after securing the final stage of the Tour with his team-mates occupying the top two overall positions.
"It’s incredible what we’ve achieved today – what a team,” said a jubilant Mark. “We got a one and two on GC but still we were riding to control things on the Champs-Elysees”.
“It was an honour to have the yellow jersey leading me out. Bradley told me he’d go full gas to the last kilometre and then Edvald (Boasson Hagen) led me into the last corner”.
“The finish couldn’t have been more perfect – no better end to this Tour,” he concluded. "It’s an incredible achievement for the team. Four years ago we said we were setting out to win the Tour”.
Cavendish secured the top point’s classifications spot during the Tour de France 2011 but had to settle for the fourth position at the 2012 version of the contest.
The 27-year-old grabbed a total number of 220 UCI points for his fourth overall position at the point’s classifications of the Tour.
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale occupied the top position with 421 UCI points while Andre Greipel of Team Lotto Belisol and Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge held the next two positions, with 280 and 268 points respectively.
While Mark helped the British team with a stage victory, Bradley Wiggins and Christopher Froome helped Team Sky with the top two overall classification positions.
Vincenzo Nibali, Jurgen Van Den Broeck and Tejay van Garderen achieved the next three spots.
Tejay van Garderen wins the young rider’s classifications with Thibaut Pinot, Steven Kruijswijk, Rein Taaramae and Gorka Taaramae securing the next four spots.
Team RadioShack-Nissan continued its lead at the team’s classifications and claimed the first spot.
Team Sky Procycling, Team BMC, Team Astana and Team Liquigas-Cannondale occupied the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
