Mark Cavendish wins the red jersey at the Giro d’ Italia 2012
A splendid performance during the 121 kilometre chase to Cervere has earned Mark Cavendish not only a stage victory but also an overall lead at the point’s classifications.
The cyclist started his first Grand Tour race of the season in style and bagged the second stage of the race.
He was unfortunately caught up in a massive pile up during the stage 3 of the Giro after Roberto Ferrari of Team Androni Giocattoli changed his line of sprint.
However, the cyclist has now left his past behind as he filled his bag with a stage 13 victory during the Italian event.
It is his third stage win of the Italian Grand Tour this season including the stage 2 and the stage 5 wins at the Italian Grand Tour in the first week of the race.
Cavendish rode brilliantly during the stage 13 of the Giro and earned 29 important UCI points which has now helped him with an overall lead the point’s classifications.
He is leading the category with a total number of 106 UCI points in his pocket.
Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge is 31 points behind at the second spot while Joaquim Rodriguez of Team Katusha and Domenico Pozzovivo of Team Colnago-CSF Inox holds the third and the fourth positions with 55 and 49 positions in the respective order.
Cavendish cited, “Now I am in the red jersey I am motivated to stay in the Giro until Milan. But we'll see if I can finish the mountain stages within the time limit".
"It's taken me a week to recover from the crash that I had but every day I'm feeling better and better".
"Everything turned out perfectly for me in the finale. The team did a good job, my friends are very committed, but Geraint and the other lack a bit of experience.
“Give us a little time and our train will be perfect".
Reigning World Champion is now optimistic to defend his lead for the coming stages of the race.
He has reclaimed the red jersey and is now eyeing the 205 kilometre stage between Cherasco to Cervinia scheduled on May 19th, 2012.
