Mark Cavendish wins the stage 5 of the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Mark Cavendish sprinted his way across the finish line during the fifth stage of the Giro d’ Italia 2012 and claimed his second stage victory at the Italian race.
The cyclist is having a terrific season and has already filled his bag with two stages at the event.
He crashed during the stage 4 after Roberto Ferrari of Team Androni-Giocattoli changed his line of sprint.
Mark has taken full use of the rest day and finally restored his strengths during the 199 kilometre chase to Fano.
He crossed the finish line in a fastest time of 4 hours, 43 minutes and 15 seconds and overcome his main competitors.
Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge Cycling Team finished second with Daniele Bennati of Team RadioShack-Nissan and Robert Hunter of Team Garmin-Barracuda finishing at the third and the fourth positions.
Mark was happy after the stage victory and cited, "I didn't feel good all day with that many anti-inflammatories".
"I was suffering with the heat. It wore me out. I was comfortable on the climb, but I was dead at the finish”.
“I could see Gossy's shadow the whole way, getting closer and closer. I was happy to hang on for the win”.
"I'm very happy, my daughter and my girlfriend came to see me here, so I could not go wrong”.
“This is the first time they have seen me compete, and it is also the first time that Delilah has been with me on the podium”.
Mark has now jumped up to the fifth overall spot after the stage five classifications.
Ramunas Navardauskas of Team Garmin-Barracuda is leading the classifications with Robert Hunter occupying the second spot.
Ryder Hesjedal and Matthew Harley Goss are holding the third and the fourth positions after the overall classifications.
Team Garmin-Barracuda is holding the top spot after the stage 5 team’s classifications with Team BMC, Team RadioShack-Nissan, Team Orica-GreenEdge and Team Sky are holding the next four spots.
Cavendish is now eyeing the 207 kilometre stage 6 of the race which will be an ideal opportunity for the Manxman to improve his overall position.
