The Dallas Mavericks owner is at it again; Ranks O.J. Mayo as a superstar material …
Mark Cuban is as passionate an owner as you will find in NBA. He also is a great marketer when it comes to selling his product to his fans.
Cuban has been one of the most successful owners in the NBA, partly because he spent a lot of money to get good talent on the roster, and partly because he sold the idea of the Mavericks to the fans in a way that created a great
deal of excitement around the franchise. This past season, Cuban’s plan for the franchise did not pan out as expected. With a lot of salary cap flexibility, Cuban was looking to spend big money to land a superstar that could pair with Dirk Nowitzki. However,
he lost out on Deron Williams as well as Dwight Howard, and in the end had to make a few smart acquisitions to keep the Mavericks in playoff contention for the upcoming season.
One of the new acquisitions that Cuban did over the summer was O.J. Mayo, the 6th man of the Memphis Grizzlies. The wily owner believes that Mayo can rise from his role as a back up and become one of the superstars in
the league, if given the right opportunity. He was talking to the Dallas Morning News recently:
“I think he can be a star and I think O.J. knows that this is his make-or-break, who-am-I-really-going-to-be-in-this-league year. And Coach [Rick Carlisle] is going to give him that opportunity. We’ll see what happens.”
This is indeed a make or break year for Mayo, who was a standout talent in his first two seasons for the Memphis Grizzlies, but lost his starting spot when their offence switched to the front court and became heavily dependent
on Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Last season, Mayo averaged only 12.6 points per game while coming consistently off the bench.
As Mayo joins the Mavericks, he knows he has the opportunity to create a nice for himself. Dallas currently has only one main scoring option in Nowitzki, and if Mayo can prove his abilities, he can easily become the second scorer
for the team. He has the opportunity to excel, and now it is up to him to make good on his chance.
